MWeston Demos the Final Pandora (CNC)
March 23, 2009It looks live we’ve got our first video from MWeston. He’s assembled his final prototype (including the lightpipe). In this video he shows us the unit from boot, to a warm cup of Quake.
You can’t say you’re not excited now.
Update: A few people have been asking about the small gap along the front, where the case doesn’t seem to go together fully. As MWeston explains, it’s due to the chunky prototype keymat:
. . . that stiff, basically unusable keymat is pretty unforgiving inside the case. The PCB should line up with the top of the SD card slot holes but it sits low and you can see the board edge a bit through the slot opening so that right there creates a gap in the two halves. More proof of this can be seen with the nubs that are sitting a bit low and that is because the keymat keeps the board from getting close enough to the top plastic (and sitting flush on its mounting pegs).
Is the title spacing messed up? Or am i just that drunk.
by Butterman March 23, 2009 at 7:23 pmGreat ๐
we’re near !
by Hells_Dark March 23, 2009 at 7:31 pmomg its so close i can feel it, looks lovely, shame about westons quake abilitied though ๐
by spray190 March 23, 2009 at 7:49 pmButterman: Looks like align:justify; to me. Remove the from the (bar paintjob) and it should space normally.
by bleh March 23, 2009 at 8:01 pm:O:O:O:O:O
by Jordan March 23, 2009 at 8:19 pmI want it NOW!
Sweet.
I like the look of the d-pad. You obviously won’t be able to tell until you get it in your hands but I’m hopeful by the looks of it that’ll I’ll be able to pull off fireball after fireball on that thing. I just hope it’s a bit spongy when you press it, like the SNES d-pad (my fav d-pad of all time) and not ‘clicky’ like a new Dual Shock pad d-pad (they don’t get good until they’ve had a few months play on them).
Anyone know what the tune was on the vid?
by kaprikawn March 23, 2009 at 8:19 pmYessssss.
by gruso March 23, 2009 at 8:38 pmCool that it all works, I wish he had an HD cam that didn’t do retarded focusing though
by Kloplop321 March 23, 2009 at 9:19 pmthe matarial of the casing looks like cheap plastic made of crap.
hurp durp
by smalldelaynothingbad March 23, 2009 at 9:38 pmMan, that music was bad. Looking forward to a professional video from ED!
by anexanhume March 23, 2009 at 9:48 pmThat’s my future most treasured item right there ๐ Can’t wait!
by Frank March 23, 2009 at 10:01 pm> “the matarial of the casing looks like cheap plastic made of crap.”
Your face does^H^H^H It’s a CNC prototype, do your homework.

by Xian Long March 23, 2009 at 11:05 pmLooking damn good, can’t wait to see the better quality one ๐
by Trip March 24, 2009 at 12:42 amWow… amazing. I’m so glad things are looking so good so far. Looks almost surreal, yet so tangible!
I’d love to watch DOSBox and other emulators running on the next video.
Keep up with the great work, MWeston, EvilDragon… all of you guys!
by LastPucho March 24, 2009 at 12:44 amSo… I noticed your root password was blank, lol. ๐
by Ray March 24, 2009 at 12:46 amNow i think i noticed the case doesnt fit properly together near the sd slots and volume control. That could be due to like ED said that their dev boards dont fit completely, although is it possible the mk3 boards could have a fitting issue as well since they are testing dev boards here and not mk3?
looks awsome, cant wait to get my hands on it to play with.
by krooked March 24, 2009 at 1:03 amIt doesn’t fit right because of the prototype keymat they are using.
Check the thread here for more info..

I’m not as excited as I thought I would be
by durp March 24, 2009 at 2:38 amvideo isnt really exciting, except the leds and the dpad
by PoisonedV March 24, 2009 at 3:43 amIf you check the youtube video description their is a _little_ bit more information for you guys
“Here is a quick and much requested video of the white Pandora which was built a few days ago. It is the first fully working, portable, near final unit. Still some things to tweak up which we are not happy with, but we are almost there now.
You can see use of the keyboard, the nubs, the dpad, the action buttons, the LEDs and the touchscreen.
I should point out the final Pandora will be black – this is white so that we can see any stress points on the case (and fix them).
The game is Quake@800*480 via the SGX (solid 60FPS with dynamic lighting), the OS is Linux (Angstrom). We will do a video with Quake3 soon.

by Soulkiller March 24, 2009 at 4:58 amThe video has been picked up by Engadget now. ๐
by musicalwoods March 24, 2009 at 6:15 am@durp: it’s probably because of all the delays……… This thing isn’t born yet but it’s already too old.
by tt March 24, 2009 at 11:12 am[…] “We will make a more professional video in a few days,” says the title card, conveniently summing up the ethos of this homebrew gaming project. It may be past Christmas, but Pandora is alive. […]
by Near-Final Pandora Linux Gaming Handheld Shown Actually Playing Something [Gaming] | FEELINGEEKY.com March 24, 2009 at 12:23 pmwhats the point of using a d-pad to play a fps, when you got two analog sticks?
by schwong March 24, 2009 at 12:47 pmschwong: I got the feeling the analog sticks wasn’t calibrated when craig made the video. Looks like he have to push the stick all the way to left/right/up/down to move ingame, not just push alittle as it should work. but i dunno….

by Near-Final Pandora Linux Gaming Handheld Shown Actually Playing Something [Gaming] | Gigategy March 24, 2009 at 2:01 pmr00tw00t: yeah, i hope so. and i really hope fps’s like this will get controlls we allready know from halo and other console-fps’s (looking with one, moving with the other). or else, dual nobs will be such a waste.
i dream of the day where we actually get to see a video with things the way its supposed to be. its always something that aint there. and with someone actually PLAYING a game, not just pushing the buttons.
by schwong March 24, 2009 at 3:14 pmpandora isn’t even out and weve got so many damn fanboys-gruso

I would change it for something like: “MWeston demos a complete non-final Pandora”.

by Top Posts « WordPress.com March 25, 2009 at 12:17 amLets hope Ed’s prediction of the end of april is right. Can’t wait for my P to arrive. Looks good in white but I think it’ll look better in black..
by puppydee March 25, 2009 at 1:25 amThe next revised CNC needs to be sent to Michael not sidetracked to the other devs. Michael seems the far most important now and he was the last to see this prototype. Why? Doesn’t make any sense.
by Jim March 25, 2009 at 12:46 pm@1337knittah – The mouse pointer showing through is currently being worked on and wont be a problem when the Pandora’s released ๐
@Jim – The case is being shipped from China and it just takes longer to reach Michael in Canada than it does Ed in Germany or most of the other devs. It never actually got side tracked, just had slower shipping.
by Trip March 25, 2009 at 3:46 pmOh I thought it was the same case being shipped from China to Fatih in Turkey then Fatih to Michael in Canada. I must of misunderstood.
