Caster: the game, headed for Pandora?
January 30, 2009
If the whispers around the water cooler are true, Pandora could be in line for a commercial port of Caster, the frenetically paced 3rd-person gem created by one man coding army Mike Smith. Caster casts the player as (you guessed it) a Caster, sent to cleanse the land of destructive invaders with the aid of a highly visual arsenal. A saga in the making, the first episode has just been released for Windows and Mac (at a very nice price, it must be said). Video after the break.
Well, is that just a third-person shooter?
I’m not saying that this game is crap (I should play to it before making such a jugment) but I don’t see anything exciting in this video…
by JP January 30, 2009 at 8:08 amThat would be awesome…. We need a commercial game…
But I didn’t understand why you made now this article… What’s new?
P.S: Cool gameplay… I don’t like the ambients…

Could you explain me what are you finding so cool in this gameplay? I just see some character strafing and shooting at foes. That’s basically a 3rd-person Quake with outside levels only. Am I wrong?
by JP January 30, 2009 at 8:24 ami have to say i think that looks like fun.
if the rumours are true we should be as supportive as we can, the more commercial games that are successful on pandora the more there are likely to be. the more commercial offerings (along with netbook type functionality) the more popular the device is likely to be, thus more games etc etc.
bravo i say!

I’d say it’s the varied locations and the types of magic you are casting.
Going by the comments on the website, it’s got quite the retro feel to it which would definitely appeal to a great many Pandora user already.
At the end of the day most games can be simply defined as being just another type of genre.
I’d say give the game a go. Download the demo and check it out. I will.

by TAC January 30, 2009 at 9:23 amJust finished a quick go of the demo. There is certainly some good promise in there. You can alter the graphics via the .ini file to have cell-shading and depth of field which adds a nice feel to it.
The first level I played starts you off slowly. One thing you want to do is power up your initial weapon to have more of an effect. The enemies weren’t impressive but it was an easy introduction.
The next level I played had these flea-like creatures that made a nice effect of rippling the landscape when they landed from one of their jumps. These guys are a little harder to kill. The final two you kill are even harder!
I’m impressed. š
This game would work very well on the Pandora.

Thanks for the input! š
by JP January 30, 2009 at 10:40 am[…] some how it did, there are even kick ass games going to be released one of the is Caster the frenetically paced 3rd-person gem created by one man coding army Mike Smith, we are talking […]
by Here is Open(Source)Pandora, The Ultimate Fun Device | The Blog Pirate January 30, 2009 at 2:27 pmI’d probably buy it if it’s available for the Pandora especially with it being $9.99 that’s if it’s the same price as the windows version. I see you get more level updates for free aswell, cool, wonder how long they will continue for. I could probably get into this game. Lets hope the rumours are true š
by puppydee January 30, 2009 at 7:17 pmdo you have any sources for this game coming to pandora?
by tomtom January 30, 2009 at 11:14 pmor did u just made it up
I don’t make things up. š
by gruso January 30, 2009 at 11:57 pmBlogs like “The Blog Pirate” are why I’m hesitant to read the damned things. Heavy biases and ritualistic slaughter of the English language do not a good site make.
by Nietzsche January 31, 2009 at 12:12 am@tomtom: Gruso’s not making this up. I’m the guy doing the work. š
by Svartalf January 31, 2009 at 6:15 amoh, hehe
well, then okay š
Ive already tried the demo on windows…
its really nice.
one thing I didnt like was that u cant play the game with a gamepad
(I tried playing it with the x360 controller)
its just a pain in the ass….
but it was okay with a mouse….
maybe it’ll be working okay with touchscreen
by tomtom January 31, 2009 at 8:21 amHmm, maybe Svartalf will take that as a request to map mouse functions to the analogue nubs. š Sounds good to me.
by gruso January 31, 2009 at 9:52 amHah, someone’s read the Fionavar series. The speed of it looks pretty nice, makes me think Zone of Enders for some reason.
by Brock January 31, 2009 at 10:49 amHehe… Uh, it is supposed to take game controller inputs- guess I’m going to have to check that out. I don’t think doing mouse/touch-pad’s going to fly for Pandora and by itself it’ll be annoying if you’re doing HTPC/Beagleboard setups (which is the other target I’m supposed to be making this for…).
FYI, guys. Gruso listed this as a “maybe” in the blog at my request. While it’s very definitely going to come if I and Elecorn have any say in the matter, things DO happen to delay things in this industry (All one has to do is look at the Linux/MacOS version of UT3 (which is still being said to be getting delivered…SOMEDAY…) to see where I’m going here…). Until it’s into almost beta stage, it’s a “maybe” š
by Svartalf January 31, 2009 at 5:19 pmThat game looks Gnarly! I will definitely be looking forward that release!
