Galactic Artifact

January 9, 2009

Trevor Bradley has been working on an impressive looking game for the Pandora. He describes it as a noncombat, real time space exploration game. The goal of the game is to find a hidden prize artifact in a galaxy of 40,000,000 stars, which is divided into 10,000,000 sectors of space before your friend does. Sound impossible? Well, apparently it isn’t. You explore the various sections of space looking for different artifacts, then selling them to aliens who will either give you cash to upgrade your ship, or information about the location of the prize artifact. As you collect this information, you rule out large sections of space until you’re left with a small area to easily find the prize.
Currently, he’s trying to clean up the code enough so it’ll run at a decent frame rate on the Pandora, however if he’s unable to he says he might just release it for the PC. Either way, this will be a very cool game!

More pics after the break.

UPDATE: You can now download a pre-alpha binary from here (Windows/Linux)
Note: This is not a complete version, so expect some bugs. Also, Trevor would like to keep this within the community, so don’t redistribute it. Be sure to read his post before you download.

  1. This looks pretty cool. It’s ridiculously nerdy, but then again I’m betting most of the Pandora users are too πŸ˜‰

  2. You should have seen my last game for the gp2x “Factor: A Game of Primes”. This game is awesome and mainstream by comparison.

(Dude, I’ve been BLOGGED about, how cool is that?)

As I posted on GP32x, I’d like the pre-alpha binary to not stray too far from the Pandora community. It’s still an unfinished product and the game deserves much more polish before a proper release. So don’t redistribute this file too far. πŸ™‚

    • Alright, I just added a note about that.

Kinda wish I ran something other than OS X so I could actually play it πŸ˜›

  3. I know someone else with OS X who would also love to try a copy. I don’t have a Mac and have no idea on how to package the alpha for the Mac.

Does anyone have an OSX system compiling C++ code with SDL, SDL_mixer, SDL_image and SDL_gfx installed who would be willing to repackage this for the Mac? If you’re interested in making an OSX version for us all, send me an email at tgb@sfu.ca

  4. wow, reminds me of DOS game style for some reason πŸ˜›

  5. It’s inspired by the original “Star Control 2”, one of the last great DOS games. The fact that the controls are all keyboard probably help the image… πŸ™‚

  6. This game *rocks*!

I’m looking forward to subsequent versions, hoping it will get better and better!

But just for now, it’s still fine when you want to relax shortly with a completely stress-free game.
