Twitterix: “Oh, I forgot to tell you…”

Craigix: Oh, forgot to tell you all, the battery was upped to 4200mah and our tests are showing this monster is going to give something like 14 hours

A device that allows you to watch a 10 hour Eurovision marathon, then clock Mario 16 times? Finally! A nice win for frequent flyers, mountain climbers, and anyone who doesn’t carry mains voltage in their backback. Thanks to calc84maniac for spotting it first.

You might have noticed the lack of updates this week. Well, good news! There aren’t any now either. The case moulds are reportedly going smoothly, and all we can really do is wait for them to finish. But a quiet blog is a cold, dark hell, so a little forum trawling was in order. Below are some questions, answers and pieces of banter from the last week on GP32X. Consume slowly. You need to conserve your strength.

Video: MAME! I wanna live forever.

July 30, 2009

An actual video from actual Craig. Craig’s Youtube account anyway; it’s actually MWeston behind the camera. The team has heeded our calls for some Pand-only content and thrown together ten solid minutes of MAME, nicely framed for the d-pad lovers to boot. It looks… splendid. For the newcomers, this is not a final Pandora but a transparent CNC prototype that’s been around for a while. But it’s what inside that counts. ❤

Dare we go there again? Another video on the way (TM)

It must be said, last time we announced an impending video based on a passing comment, it didn’t end so well. But here at op.wp we’re addicted to mayhem, and if you’re reading this, you are too. Go on, admit it. This little sequence of craigix communicoids goes from promising to amusing to promising again, and seemed worth sharing. First came the tweet:

Doing a new Pandora software roundup video with the latest wares. Going well.

Then a comment on the forums. It turns out a certain fruit-emblazoned box of tricks took issue with Craig’s ext2 formatted SD card.

I just made the mistake of putting one of the Pandora SD cards in to a mac. It seems the mac, being a mac, thought it would be a good idea to do something macish to the SD card which has now caused it not to work in the Pandora anymore.

Great. Let’s see if I can solve this on the PC.

A Pandora Update?

July 11, 2009

In one of craigixs craziest videos yet; after losing to gravity craig gives us a quick update on the situation of the next Pandora video and reassures us that he’s working hard at it.

(Pandora part starts at 4:54 if you’re in a hurry)

Twitterix: What say you on the first 100?

Just to lend some context to this, Craig floated the idea back in March of sending out the first handful of completed Pandoras to a selection of lucky testers, for a fortnight of real world hammering before the remainder of the batch shipped. The topic has come up again in the last day or so, and is now brought to you in Twitterix form.

How do we decide who gets these first 100 Pandoras.. and how might we organise the feedback? For the sake of software should we go all devs?

Here’s an idea. We’ll start by listing everyone who doesn’t want one of the first ones. That’ll narrow it right down, oh yes. If you have a better idea (and let’s face it, your cat probably does), fire up the keyboard and have at it.

Official Blog: At least I’m not dead.

This one’s a day or so old now (forgive us, we love the nightlife). In short, UPS are jerks and Craig would like to hear your thoughts. Hint: “Don’t use UPS” has been mentioned once or twice already.

Things are always a learning curve the first time you try them. Apart from maybe suicide.

Anyway, the point is the last couple of weeks have had delays caused by a most unexpected event – US Taxes and UPS.

See the thing is we ship the parts to the USA, Dallas to be exact, they put them on a PCB and then all that comes back to the UK. But here is the weird part – UPS keeps wanting us to pay taxes on these parts – even though they are to be re-exported soon after. We have tried the recommended routes ‘Temporary export’ and ‘Controlled goods’ but still, randomly, a huge tax bill arrives. It’s frustrating stuff which we are having to try to deal with yet UPS keep moving the goal posts.

Now, here is the community involvement part – does anyone out there know the real way to deal with this? The real rules? As UPS just keep changing the story every time.

So is there anyone out there who can shed some light on how we should be doing this to avoid those taxes? An expert on US customs and taxes maybe? You can answer over on the forum.

Aside from this we are very pleased and happy to have chosen to manufacture in the USA rather than China – I hear, alas, that’s a pretty rare thing these days.
