XBMC ported to Beagleboard

May 30, 2009

This isn’t Pandora news (yet), but Beagleboard news is good news for Pandorians. Xbox Media Center developer Michael McGeagh has successfully ported XBMC to ARM, and shows it off here on video. It’s a work in progress, not yet taking advantage of OpenGL ES. But XBMC fans will all agree: this is a Good Thing.

Thanks to bigbottombill for the big hot tip.

New OpenGL ES driver, and more

May 29, 2009

Another day, another holler out to backroom hacker Cpasjuste, who today announced new OpenGL ES drivers for Pandora, and a slew of other goodies. Let’s be honest here, most of us won’t fully understand what all this is about. But sometimes the expression of joy on a fellow developer’s face is all you need to know that it’s good. Hit the source link for full details, along with downloads and tutorials.

After a lot of work, i finally successfully writed an OpenGL ES pandora driver for the upcoming SDL 1.3 library.

The pandora video driver allow to use SDL 1.3 with OpenGL ES support under the framebuffer, but for now i didn’t writed the input event part, so we need to add our own control system. This will be added to the pandora video driver soon, i bet before the official pandora release.

I also added OpenGL ES support for the x11 video driver, so we can use SDL 1.3 with OpenGL ES support under X, with input event working and all that crap. So it mean that this one is fully functionnal.

I contacted Sam, the author of the SDL library, this one confirmed me that we can dynamically link our application against SDL 1.3 for FREE, and that we can add this shared library for free in our Pandora firmware image. This mean that you can already start coding application under the SDL 1.3 library, it will be free for the pandora.

Be warned: This post may cost you an hour of your day. Forum member WhiteBat has trawled all five corners of the ‘verse to compile a Pandora family album of sorts, covering everything from official photos to fan renders. Funner than Aunt Esme’s snaps of Cairo, and way more Pandora. Go go go!

Some forum Q&A with Craig

Artist's Impression

Weekend updates are always a treat, even if you have to wait until Monday to get them. Some feisty forumers caught Craig in a chatty mood on Saturday, and eeked out some juice on where we’re at with cases and things. In short, the final two items of focus are hinge testing (because Open Pandora doesn’t want to pull a DS on you) and d-pad height (because DaveC cares about d-pads more than you’ll ever know). From a quality point of view, these things are good things. Rather than paste a few quotes here, we recommend you click through and read the entire thread – context being golden, and all that.

Hear it all from the horse’s mouth here.

Youtube channel surfing, abundance of

May 23, 2009

Welcome once again to op.wp, your virtual subscription to Pickle’s Youtube channel. Today we present, for the first time, community minigame project PandoraPanic! running on actual Pandora hardware. The video features a detailed demonstration of how to lose each minigame – we’re assuming this is done for informational purposes only, and has nothing to do with using household tools to control gameplay. Next on the list is OpenJazz, otherwise known as the legendary Jazz Jackrabbit. Catch that one after the break.

While we’re rabbiting on about Youtube, Craig has opened up discussion on how his own Youtube channel can be utilised most effectively, now that the new HD camera is in action. The first thing we can all do to help is subscribe to his videos, and spread the word. You’re also invited to contribute your ideas on video content, which you can do here.

Evolution II: The Trainspotting

pEvolution

Following on from the recent display of Pandora’s primary colours (har), we now have some very texty elaboration on which board revision is which. If wading through the spicks n’ specs isn’t your thing, jump to the end for a clue or two about the status of all things. Over to MWeston:

ver 1.0 – rev1 – blue – TEST – no wifi/bt, just a test board to get things rolling, learned a lot here and then rev2 changed a whole whack of things to be much, much better

ver 1.1 – rev2 – red – NEAR FINAL PROTO – wifi/bt, batt connector, basically ready to look like a production board but had errors and needed holes moved to line up with final case design

ver 1.2 – rev3 – green – PRE-PRODUCTION – added battery fuel gauge for better battery control and longer battery life, this is another test board that was supposed to be the same board going into production but Notaz and I found some quirks in the OMAP3 chip (such as GPIO’s only being GPI’s!!!)

Sonic Robo Blast 2 sneaks in quietly

This isn’t so much an announcement, as a passing comment that’s been mined from the forums and blown up into a big colourful blog post. Just look at those colours. Don’t pretend they don’t take you back to a better place. Word from the Wiz quarter is that Sonic Robo Blast 2 is now running on both Wiz and Pandora, courtesy of – you guessed it – Pickle. A suitably fast paced video (of the PC version) awaits you after the break.
